Winter Riding Essentials | Small Additions, Big Difference

Winter does not have to mean hanging up the bike. The right setup and a few smart accessories can make cold weather rides just as enjoyable as summer miles. Here are some simple upgrades and packing hacks that keep your rides comfortable, safe, and rolling smoothly through the season.

1. Mudguards that actually work

A good set of full length guards is the single best winter upgrade you can make. They keep the worst of the road spray off you and your drivetrain, and they make group rides much more civilised.

We use SKS Bluemels on most All Road builds as they fit cleanly, look tidy, and hold up season after season. The All Road has discreet mounting points front and rear, so they slot straight in and do their job without rattling or rubbing.

2. Lights always on

Even if you are not riding in the dark, winter light is unpredictable. Run a small front and rear light on every ride. Modern USB options are light, waterproof, and easy to charge between rides, while some of our customers opt for dynamo setups for consistent, always on power through the winter.

Set your lights to a low flash mode for maximum visibility in grey conditions. It makes a bigger difference than you think.

3. Tyres with a little more bite

A few extra millimetres of width and a more robust casing go a long way. For most road and all road setups, 30 to 35 mm tyres with light tread strike a perfect balance between comfort and control.

For maximum comfort or if you are switching to light gravel, 45c tyres are a great option, giving you extra cushioning and grip without feeling sluggish.

Check pressures regularly as colder air can drop them faster than you think.

4. Bar tape and gloves

Thicker tape and winter gloves might sound obvious, but they make long rides infinitely more enjoyable. Look for gloves that balance warmth with dexterity. Bulky does not always mean better.

5. Chain care and lubrication

Road salt and grit are brutal on drivetrains. Wipe your chain after every ride and reapply a wet weather lube. It takes two minutes and saves a lot of wear.

6. Frame protection and storage

A thin layer of frame protection tape around cable rub points and the underside of your downtube helps keep paint fresh through winter grime. A small saddle bag with a multitool, tube, and a snack is worth its weight when conditions change mid ride.

7. The extra layer rule

You can always take it off, but you cannot put it on if you did not bring it. A lightweight gilet or packable rain jacket should live in every rider’s pocket from now until spring.

8. Built for winter adventures

The All Road features plenty of mounting points for panniers, bottles, and mudguards, perfect for riders who keep exploring through the colder months. Whether it is a weekend trip or a long winter commute, the frame is designed to carry what you need without compromise.

Questions & Answers

FAQ

What tyre pressure should I run in winter?

Slightly lower than in summer for better grip and comfort. Aim for around 5 to 10 PSI less, depending on rider weight and terrain.

Can I use my summer wheels through winter?

You can, but it is worth using a second set with tougher tyres or alloy rims to protect your main setup from grit and salt.

How can I tell if my position is right for winter riding?

Book a bike fit with Foundation Bike Fit or request a CAD drawing from us to check your setup before longer winter miles.

Is titanium really better for winter riding?

Yes. It resists corrosion, handles rough conditions, and does not need paint protection to stay looking great year after year.
